5 Common Mistakes When Building an E-Commerce Site
08.08.2026 · By Webixtan
Building an e-commerce site is about more than just uploading products. The mistakes below are common to sites that technically "work" but don't actually sell.
1. A complicated checkout flow
Every extra step between cart and payment means potential lost customers. Ideally, checkout shouldn't exceed 3-4 steps, and guest checkout should be available.
2. Design that was never tested on mobile
Most traffic comes from mobile, yet many sites are only tested on desktop. Buttons need to be easily tappable, and images need to load fast.
3. Low-quality product photos
Since people can't physically touch the product, images are the biggest source of trust. Blurry or too few photos directly hurt conversion rates.
4. Hidden shipping/return information
If shipping cost appears as a surprise at checkout, a large share of users abandon their cart. Showing this info upfront on the product page improves conversion.
5. Leaving SEO for later
Product page titles, descriptions and URL structure aren't a detail to add later — they should be part of the site's foundation from day one.
In our e-commerce packages, we build all five of these into the design process from the start.
