How to Build a Multilingual Website: An SEO Guide for Turkish, English, German and Arabic
03.10.2026 · By Webixtan
Publishing in several languages is one of the most direct ways to enter a new market. But a multilingual site is more than translated text: search engines need to understand which page is meant for which language and region. This guide summarizes the core SEO steps for languages such as Turkish, English, German and Arabic.
1. Give each language its own address
Use a separate URL per language, for example /hizmetler for Turkish and /en/services for English. Setups that switch language on the same address through a cookie or browser setting make it hard for search engines to find and index each version separately.
2. Use hreflang tags correctly
hreflang tells search engines about the equivalents of the same content in other languages. Each page should list all language versions, itself included, and they should link back to one another. A x-default version is defined for visitors who have not chosen a language. Incorrect or one-way hreflang tags are often ignored.
3. Write titles and meta descriptions in every language
If translation stops at body text, titles may show in the wrong language in search results. Prepare separate titles and descriptions per language and use keywords native to each one. A directly translated keyword may not be what people in the target country actually search for.
4. Do not force redirects by IP
Automatic location-based redirects can send users to the wrong language and keep search engine bots from reaching the other versions. Offer a visible language switcher and let the user choose.
5. Right-to-left layout for Arabic
Arabic pages need lang="ar" and dir="rtl", and the design must be mirrored: menus, alignment, arrows and form fields follow a right-to-left flow. This is a decision made at the start of the design, not a patch added later.
6. Sitemap and internal links
Add language alternates to your sitemap and make sure the switcher on each page leads to the equivalent page. A switcher that only returns to the home page loses both the user and the search engine.
7. Do not leave machine translation unchecked
Automatic translation is a quick start, but a native speaker should review it before publishing. In fields such as healthcare, law and finance, a faulty translation directly damages trust.
