Why Website Maintenance Matters: A Monthly Checklist
04.10.2026 · By Webixtan
A website's work is not done at launch. Software ages, vulnerabilities appear, links break and speed drops over time. A neglected site can quietly stop working one day, and very often your customer is the first to notice. Regular maintenance is the cheapest way to catch these risks while they are small.
Why maintenance matters
- Security: Outdated software and plugins are the route attackers use most often.
- Speed: Accumulated images and unnecessary code slow pages down, which affects both users and rankings.
- Uptime: An expired SSL certificate or a broken form can cost customers without anyone noticing.
- SEO: Broken links and indexing errors quietly pull your rankings down.
Monthly maintenance checklist
1. Backups
Keep regular backups of both files and the database, and occasionally test that a backup can really be restored. Do not store backups only on the same server.
2. Updates
Keep your platform, plugins and server-side components up to date. Try major updates in a test environment first.
3. Security check
Review security headers, admin panel access and password policies. Close unused accounts and keep an eye on admin logins.
4. SSL and domain expiry
Put the expiry dates of your SSL certificate and domain in your calendar. An expired certificate triggers a full-page warning in browsers.
5. Form and contact tests
Submit your contact, appointment and order forms once a month to confirm emails and notifications arrive.
6. Broken links and 404 errors
Scan for links pointing to deleted or moved pages and add redirects where needed.
7. Speed and image optimization
Measure page speed, compress newly uploaded images and remove unnecessary scripts. See our Core Web Vitals guide for details.
8. Indexing and search performance
Check indexing and crawl issues in Google Search Console and make sure your sitemap is current.
Do it yourself or leave it to an agency?
On a small site you can do some of these checks yourself. Technical work such as updates, security and restoring backups needs expertise, and one mistake can take the site down. At Webixtan we offer regular maintenance covering updates, security, backups and SEO monitoring. See our maintenance and support service or write to us.
